Hawk Country Reporter Grant
Project Description: This project targets two Life Skills Special Education classrooms containing students with various physical and mental disabilities at Flagstaff Middle School. Many of these students are nonverbal and communicate by using augmentative communication devices. This project pairs general and special education students in producing a school newspaper called The Hawk Country Reporter. The special education students will be provided with appropriate assistive technology that allows them to fully participate in the production of the newspaper.
Proposed Outcome: Special Education and general education equally participate in producing a school newspaper. The assistive technology allows the students with disabilities to be active participants in their learning process. It also provides real-life experiences to practice using their augmentative communication devices in functional settings with their peers.
Targeted Population: The students served through this grant are middle school students that fall into these categories: Mild, Moderate, and Severe Mentally Handicapped; Physically Handicapped; Severe Sensory Impaired; Autistic; Visually/Hearing Impaired; and General Education
