Graduate-Level Professional Growth Academy Classes

All PGA classes are 15-45 seat hours in length and will earn 1-3 graduate credit(s) on the FUSD salary schedule. PGA classes can be used toward advancement on the FUSD salary schedule, Career Ladder ICP points, and AZ re-certification seat hours. The following PGA classes are starting soon. All PGA classes must have a minimum of 8 participants to "make." Call Gretchen Markiewicz at 6141 or email her at gmarkiewicz@fusd1.org to sign up for PGA classes. PGA classes are free to all FUSD teachers, administrators, and classified staff. Instructors are paid $500/ credit hour and can offer classes at their convenience after school or on weekends. If you would like to develop and teach a PGA class, please contact Steve Larson at 527-6130 or slarson@fusd1.org.

Summer 2008 Class Descriptions

Summer SEI-45

Description: This course is designed to assist teachers in the instruction of English Language Learners (ELLs) and language minority students. It follows the SIOP protocol and helps teachers develop lessons, materials and instructional models to maximize the learning of ELLs. This class meets the requirements for the 45-hour component of the Arizona SEI endorsement.

Section VIII: Five consecutive full days during June

When: June 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 2008

Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Where: FUSD District Office, 3285 E. Sparrow Ave.

Instructor: Sue Pierce

Credit: Teachers will receive 3 graduate hours towards advancement on the FUSD salary schedule. They will also receive 3 Career Ladder ICP points. In addition, this class will meet the requirement for the 45-hour component of the Arizona SEI Endorsement. _____________________________________________________

Section IX: Ten consecutive half-days during June

When: June 9th - 20th, 2008

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Where: Christensen Elementary School Library

Instructor: Kerry Kelley and Cindy Noble

Summer 2008 Mentor Academy Training:

Description: Participants in the class must be Level III or Level IV Career Ladder teachers with 7 years of full-time teaching experience. Preference will be given to teachers who want to mentor a beginning teacher in the district next fall. Participants will learn to use the language of mentoring with their mentees that is crucial to success in mentoring new teachers. They will learn the three roles of mentors. They will learn how to focus their work with beginning teachers on the Arizona Professional Teaching Standards while allowing their beginning teacher to self assess their own practice and identify needs that will advance their practice. This class is required for teachers who would like to mentor a beginning teacher to earn ICP points for their Career Ladder portfolio.

Summer Session:When: July 29th - August 1st 2008

Time: (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Where: Admin Center Board Room

Instructors: Mark Starner & Steve Larson & The New Teacher Center Trainer

Credit: 2 hours graduate credit for advancement on the FUSD salary schedule, and 30 seat hours towards re-certification for ADE. Teachers will also earn a $600 stipend for completing this training!

Registration: Please call Cyndi at extension 6130 to register for this class. There is a registration fee of $80 for materials, which will be refunded when you complete the class. Please make checks payable to FUSD.

Non-FUSD Employee Registration: Non-FUSD employees do not receive stipends, and are charged $140 registration fee and an $80 materials fee. To reserve your spot, please make out your check to FUSD and send it to the Career Ladder Office by July 1, 2008.

.Summer 2008 FUSD New Teacher Orientation:

Description: Teachers entering the profession and joining the Flagstaff Unified School District need the opportunity to have educational support at the beginning of the year to start their year and continue their career on a successful note. These trainings will provide beginning teachers with the skills and materials to be successful from day one of the school year. All new FUSD teachers are expected to attend the sessions that are appropriate to their level of experience.
