Dress Code
We believe that the students at the three high schools (Coconino, Flagstaff, and Sinagua) in the Flagstaff Unified School District are basically mature individuals who will dress and behave responsibly. Basic rules of sanitation, safety, neatness, and modesty must be observed. Students shall not dress in a manner that will disrupt the educational process. To maintain the image of FUSD and to reinforce attitudes of most parents and students, the following policy guidelines have been adopted by all three high schools. We strongly encourage each parent/guardian to read the information below and have a discussion with your student regarding appropriate dress for school.

I. General Guidelines:
• Appropriate dress will be required at all school sponsored events including school dances, competitions, and activities.
• Students may not ware items that advertise drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex, nudity, or which allude to topics inappropriate for school or considered offensive to others.
• Religious medallions, metals, and beads are acceptable if they do not extend below the belt, but may be prohibited to certain classes by the teacher as a safety precaution.
• No dress indicating gang relationship will be tolerated.
• Chains, spikes, and other clothing that present a safety hazard are not permitted.
• The high school dress code applies to all students, male and female.

II. Footwear:
• According to Arizona law, footwear must be worn at all times.

III. Pants/Skirts/Shorts
• Are to be worn at the waistline. No sagging will be permitted!
• Large holes in clothing will not be allowed.
• Clothes length and slits that go above the mid thigh are inappropriate for school.
• Undergarments that are visible are inappropriate.

IV. Shirts:
• Must have an appropriate neckline. Appropriateness will be measured by the dropping of the chin to the chest. If the chin is touching the shirt then the shirts is appropriate. No cleavage is to be showing: halter tops, tube tops, and spaghetti-straps shirts may not be worn.
• Must have appropriate length shirts that may be tucked in. No bare midriff of any kind is acceptable. Visible undergarments, such as bra straps and underwear are inappropriate.
• Shoulders, abdomen, back, and sides must be covered at all times.
• Straps that go over the shoulder must be at least the width of the student I.D. card.
• Shirts with holes are not acceptable.

V. Head Coverings:
• Any types of head covering (i.e. hats, stocking caps, visors, sunglasses, bandannas, hair nets, and hoods) are not allowed to be worn during the regular school day.
Religious head coverings may be worn with administrative approval.
Sunglasses are not to be worn in the school building.

We feel that neatness, personal hygiene, safety, and cleanliness should be stressed. It should be understood that a student will be considered in violation of this code if his/her appearance or dress has some definite impact on the discipline or educational functions of the school or affects the health, safety, or cleanliness of the student or others.
