ENROLLING HOMELESS STUDENTS
Schools CANNOT refuse to enroll a homeless student for lack of a birth certificate or immunization records, or proof of a home address. State law requires that students be enrolled as expeditiously as possible. It is our policy to get them in school, then work on obtaining the necessary paperwork and/or immunizations.
Many parents or students will not easily divulge their living situation if homeless. If there is some hesitancy, schools are encouraged to try to determine if they meet the homeless criteria shown below. Services for homeless students may be accessed by calling Bobbie Anderson, HomeStart Liaison, at (928) 606-1515. Children and youth are considered homeless if they:
-
live in temporary housing such as shelters, campgrounds or motels;
-
live in long-term, but inadequate situations such as:
-
multiple families living in crowded single-family dwellings
-
families who live in substandard housing without access to running water or adequate heating,
-
and children living with non-custodial relatives or friends.
