Description: This course will integrate basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills through the survey of literature comprised of the short story, mythology, poetry, drama and nonfiction choices. Activities will focus on the incorporation and application of composition, vocabulary development, speech, literary appreciation and language fundamentals. Texts are selected to build upon students’ prior learning, to improve reading strategies and to encourage critical thinking. The writing process will be utilized as students respond to reading and create appropriate work to build a portfolio.

Description: Basic Skills/English 9A is a required year long course for incoming freshmen who do not meet minimum reading and writing requirements. Students are placed in this class by teacher recommendation or test scores. Students will earn one elective credit and one English 9 credit for successful completion of the course. Description: A course for those who have shown above
average ability and a motivation to progress in language arts.
Will work with a variety of challenging literature including:
short stories, myths, legends, novels, poetry, drama and
nonfiction. Activities will incorporate the humanities, composition,
application of terminology, speech, independent reading,
growth in academic responsibility, clarification of language
skills, grammar in action, alternative assessment strategies,
vocabulary building, and learning options that will address
various learning styles.

Writing focuses on the standards. Student speeches focus on the four rhetorical modes. Vocabulary development and multicultural readings round out this dynamic course.

personal experience, literary texts and creative endeavors.

Description: American Studies is a yearlong, college prep, team-taught, hands-on and problem centered course. A Humanities approach allows the students time and opportunity to explore the big questions about America’s changing landscape and its effect on the lives of America’s diverse people. Description: The AP English Language and Composition course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers who can compose for a variety of purposes. By writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience, expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conversations and the resources of language contribute to effective reading.

opportunities. The course will include a long-term project.

Description: College Prep is a survey course for collegebound
seniors. The course stresses literary analysis, research

Description: Advanced Placement English Literature is designed to allow students to study college-level composition and literature at the high school level. Students practice the skills of close reading, critical writing and analytical discussion in an atmosphere of academic challenge. This course is designed for the serious college-prep student and allows not only preparation for college but also the chance to earn college credit and/or advanced standing by taking the AP English Literature Exam. We will follow the curricular requirements in the AP English course description.

• Introduce the format for AIMS and help students become
familiar with the ways in which questions are phrased.
• Improve reading and writing scores on AIMS

AIMS
• Enrich students’ experience by providing additional exposure
to the language arts to complement their work in their English
classes and math classes
• Improve students’ reading comprehension.

Description: This course is designed to:
• Introduce the format for the PSAT/SAT/ACT and help
students become familiar with the ways in which questions are
phrased.
• Improve reading and writing scores on the PSAT/SAT/ACT
• Help students identify areas of strength and weakness
• Allow students practice time to improve their confidence and
performance on timed tests
• Assist athletes who need to meet NCAA eligibility requirements
• Motivate sophomores and juniors who would like to improve
their subset scores for admission purposes.
