ART1110 - Art I (9 - 12)

Length of Course: 1 Semester

Description: This course may be the beginning of an art major or an exploratory course for any student at any grade level. It offers an opportunity to work with various media such as pencil, ink, charcoal, pastels, acrylics, and watercolors. Elements of design and art history are emphasized.

Description: The student increases competency in pencil, pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, brush and ink drawings, and in acrylic and watercolor painting. The students will perform at their own proficiency level in each area, and develop their knowledge of the principles of design and art history.

ART 1130 - Art III (11 - 12)

Description: This third year of art is intended to allow serious art students to explore personal goals and use a variety of mediums to create a portfolio of work.

ART1210 - Sculpture/Ceramics I (9 - 12)

Description: The student learns skills in various sculpture and ceramics techniques. They perform at their own proficiency level in each area, and increase their knowledge of basic design and art history. Potter’s wheel, glazing, hand-building and decorating techniques are included.

Description: The second year of Sculpture-Ceramics is designed to give the student more in-depth experiences in working on the potter’s wheel, designing hand-built sculptures, and in learning to use glazes. Students are expected to develop, maintain and experiment with their own particular interest area.

Description: The third year of Sculpture-Ceramics is for the very serious ceramic student. They will learn advanced throwing techniques, mixing glazes from scratch, and will incorporate more complex surface decoration techniques. Students are expected to keep an in-depth journal, and must enter at least two art shows during the term. Students are expected to develop, and experiment with their own particular interest area.

Description: This course is an introduction to the theatre emphasizing the fundamentals of acting (body control, voice development, theatre history, and imaginative thinking). In a workshop atmosphere, students develop an intellectual and emotional understanding of the actor, dramatic writer, designer and dramaturge’s craft.

Homework: Homework is given and memory work is required for plays. Written work is required.

Description: Theatre Arts II is designed for students who have excelled in Theatre Arts I. Not only will this course cover the performance arts of advanced acting, body control, voice development, nonverbal communication, ensemble cooperation, and imaginative thinking; but it will also cover the technical theatre arts of directing, make-up, lighting, costume design, set construction, the business of running a play production. Students participate in all aspects of the plays and productions produced by the school.

Homework: Students will read several plays with some rehearsal time outside of class required as well.

MUS1100 - Intermediate Orchestra Fall (9 - 12)
MUS1105 - Intermediate Orchestra Spring (9 - 12)

Graduation Requirements: Fine Arts or Elective credit
Prerequisites: Ability to play a string instrument and read music.
Open to Grades: 9-12
Length of Course: 1 Semester (students are encouraged to take both Fall and Spring courses)

Description: This orchestra class is offered for students who have played stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello or string bass) for one or more years. Basic orchestral concepts, scales, rhythms, and ensemble awareness skills will be emphasized. ALL PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. Students will be required to cover uniform cleaning. The course may be repeated for credit.

Homework: 1 hour per day

MUS1120 - Advanced Orchestra Fall (9 - 12)

Length of Course: 1 Semester (students are encouraged to take both Fall and Spring courses)

Description: This orchestra class will combine higher musical concepts in a performance-oriented group. Numerous concerts, rated festivals, regional and state orchestral possibilities and small ensemble job opportunities will be offered. Performance attendance is mandatory. Advanced orchestra members are expected to convey responsibility and leadership qualities as an example for underclassmen. ALL PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. Students will be required to cover uniform cleaning. The course may be repeated for credit.

Length of Course: 1 or 2 Semesters (stu dents are encouraged to take both Fall and Spring courses)

Description: This band performs as a marching unit during the fall for home football games, some out-of-town games, and at various marching festivals. After marching season, the band prepares concert and festival selections, participates in at least four concerts, two festivals, and engages in a multi-day tour that enables the ensemble to “show off,” have a little fun, and work with expert clinicians. Fund-raising is a necessary evil to enable the group to undertake all of its goals and all students are expected to participate in these activities. All students are expected to display and expand performance skills on his/her instrument through occasional playing exams and auditions. Attendance at all major performances is required. Purchase of portions of the uniform may be required.

MUS1250 - Jazz Ensemble I (9 - 12)

Description: The ensemble is for Level I students in jazz study and performance. Students will participate in various jazz festivals and community activities. A variety of jazz literature and fundamentals of jazz improvisation are studied. Attendance at all major performances is required. Purchase of portions of the uniform may be required.

Description: This course introduces basic folk guitar playing skills (acoustical, not electrical) through the social music medium (folk, classical, pop, etc.). Guitars are not supplied

Description: This class is for anyone who wants to sing. It introduces the basics of music fundamentals, reading music and choral singing. Performance attendance is required. This course provides a means for students to express themselves through music performance.

Description: This is a major performing choir representing the school. Four-part music is prepared for several concerts, festivals and a spring tour. The class is designed for continued development of all vocal skills in preparation of four or more part music. Performance attendance is required. Purchase of uniform may be required. ALL PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. Student will be responsible for purchase of performance attire and equipment as well as cleaning fees. The course may be repeated for credit.

MUS1360 - Choraliers Fall (9 - 12)

Length of Course: 1 Semester (this ensemble is intended to meet both fall and spring semesters)

Description: This is a small select vocal ensemble that specializes in a variety of musical styles. This group performs not only at the same festivals, tours and programs, as the larger vocal group, but it is also called upon to represent the school for special appearances. Performance attendance is required. Uniform may be required. ALL PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY.

MUS1450 - Instrumental Music Honors (10 - 12)

Description: Selected instrumental music students expand and improve their individual performance skills through a variety of music activities including theory, appreciation, jazz, improvisation, conducting, arranging, composition, solo and ensemble preparation, field trips, attendance at evening performances, study of careers in music, guest performers and lecturers. Students are selected by teacher referral from those students showing exceptional ability and interest in music performances.
