Site Council Meeting

February 21, 2008

In attendance: Kent Powell, Principal, Steve Boadway, Assistant Principal; teachers-Mary Laurie, secretary, Beth Criley, Donna Natseway; parents-Mike Chambers, president, Jeff Rhode, Audrey Cullen; 1 student

Item 1: Review of minutes from last meeting (1-24-08)

Motion to approve, seconded, and passed unanimously

Item 2: Discussion on implementation of newly passed dress code

PTO had discussed t-shirts for sale next year—3 colors-gray, green, white with FMS logo, polo shirts, sweatshirts, jean and/or khaki pants. Would t-shirts cost less? Not really. Could we have long-sleeved shirts? We could allow t-shirts with the FMS logo and/or TELC logo. We can provide clothing for those with financial issues. We hope money will come from Site Council and/or PTO. Mr. Powell will research local vendors and sources for seed money. He will also research numbers of families who may need this assistance; he will give PTO and Site Council the information. Possibly a scholarship application could be created or found that could be presented to incoming and continuing students. We will need parent volunteers to sell shirts in the fall. We could take gently-used shirts to wash and resell.

MEMS will accept this dress code for next year, but will not follow the modification for the rest of this year (presented at last meeting). Leupp will not follow any dress code.

Item 3: Discussion on implementation of contract based education

At yesterday's faculty meeting Mr. Powell presented a proposal for contract/TELC for next year. A full TELC team will be added (additional 60 students). It will take 3 years to transform to a full-TELC school. We will continue our TELC recruitment with the TELC contract. We will keep 22 core teachers. Half-teams and full-teams will both be available. We were not awarded the large grant NAU submitted.

Site Council could buy/acquire additional equipment if possible. Smartboards are popular as are computers that are compatible with projectors. Twelve more projectors would be ideal and is our first wish, next would be Smartboards, then laptops if a teacher's computer is not compatible. A portable laptop lab of 28 computers would be ideal, also.

Ideas for after-school tutoring: four days a week non-TELC teachers will tutor their students until 3:00; however, there is no bus until 4:00. From 3:00-4:00 could possibly be paid by Site Council. Tuesday-Thursday tutoring is also a possibility, being paid by Site Council/PTO monies. Students could tutor others. Bus-duty monitors after hours should also be paid.

TELC Informational Open House is Thursday, February 29 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Current 7 th graders have written letters to incoming students.

Item 4: New Business

  • Regarding snow days and late starts, can AIMS be delayed? If we have one more snow day, we can move it back a week (current plan is April 7-11, 14 th for science). Already in the plan is a request with our legislators for exemption for additional days added in summer.
  • We are concerned that frequent snow days and late starts are disrupting good habits and routine. We need support!
  • How will success of changes (dress code, contract education) be measured? Can we have objective statistics available to parents/students/teachers?

Item 5: Meeting adjourned at 7:07. The next regular meeting for next week is canceled. Our next meeting will be March 27 @ 5:45.
