Dual Language Program

MISSION

The mission of the Killip Dual Language Program is to provide students with an education that develops fluency and literacy in two languages (Spanish and English), while maintaining high academic standards.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

Killip's Dual Language Program is expanding and growing.  Initiated in the year 1996 with the first class, a group of kindergarteners, the program has added a grade level each year, with the first class now in the fourth grade.

The classes ideally have 50% Native Spanish speakers and 50% Native English speakers, with some variation to accommodate the needs of that grade level.  Instruction varies throughout the school day, with the target language changing for different subject matters.  Thematic Units are used to integrate the curriculum, with teachers using hands-on activities for additional opportunities for the students to learn the target language.

It is important that students and parents involved in the program that requires a commitment for the elementary years.  The duration of time is necessary to fully develop skills in both Spanish and English.

BENEFITS

Students are working toward the development of bilingualism and biliteracy, while achieving proficiency in all academic subjects.  The ability to read and write in two languages is becoming more important every year, and the jobs and opportunities that come with being bilingual are numerous.  The program also works to cultivate appreciation and understanding of other cultures.
