Killip School is proud of its School Within a School. This program is an alternative educational model based on a child's progress. A child progresses when he or she is developmentally ready, regardless of age. The children work in an environment that is structured around youngers and olders (1st-6th) interacting together which allows the children to acquire many skills and social development. The curriculum, developed by the team, is aligned with district, state, and national standards. This is a non-graded program that allows the child to progress at his or her own pace. The assessment of the child is a check list of whether or not the child has mastered a skill or whether they are still working towards mastery. The report card includes comments by the teacher that help explain the assessment. Ultimately, communication between teachers and parents is the tool that strengthens the ability to meet the child's needs. This full-day program has enrolled approximately 165 students in grades first through sixth grade and has successfully been in operation since 1993. WHAT TEACHERS EXPECT:
MEET THE TEACHERS:
Barbara Stuckey - "I've been on the SWS team since 1997. Working in this program with its multi-age focus and committed staff has been a career highlight for me. I hold a masters Degree in Elementary Education with both Reading Specialist and ESL endorsements and have taught children of all ages in a number of states since 1981. I look forward to working with you and your children. Together we can make a great team!" Dana Almquist - "I have been a teacher since 1992 and I have a Masters in Educational Leadership. It is an amazing experience to be your child's teacher and have the opportunity to witness his or her incredible learning adventure. In the SWS program, our students succeed at their own academic ability while feeling pride in themselves for reaching their greatest potential!" Wendy Tucker - "I have been teaching over ten years now and love being with SWS. I really enjoy working with the same group of students and seeing their growth through the years. This team approach really unites us into a school family. I have a wonderful husband and two sons, Trey and Bryce. I was raised in this community and I'm proud to be working in one of the best schools in Flagstaff."
