STARS Program

Killip Elementary School is in its second year of the 21 st Century Community Learning Center Grant—Student Taking Active Roles in School (STARS). STARS, working in partnership with the FACTS before-and-after-school program, provides intensive academic intervention and enrichment for Killip students and their families. Key elements include:

  • Six hours per week (1½ hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) of intensive reading/language arts and math intervention provided after-school by certified teachers.
  • Five hours per week reading time and homework assistance provided before-school by FACTS.
  • Three weeks of intersession classes (two weeks in October, one week in March) and three weeks of summer school.
  • Enrichment activities provided through FACTS from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. four days per week after STARS. (Regular FACTS hours will be provided for those students not involved in STARS and for all students on Wednesday early release days.)
  • Family Computer & Learning Lab services to meet individual family needs—i.e., language or literacy instruction, computer skills, and academic support for students.
  • Computer lab open to the public from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. four days per week after STARS.
  • Ongoing evaluation of student progress using benchmark testing—DIBELS three times per year K-3 and 4Sight five times per year for grades 3-6.
  • Annual program evaluation to determine overall impact, revise the model to make necessary improvements, and report progress to Arizona Department of Education, FUSD Administration and Governing Board, FACTS Advisory Council, City Council of Flagstaff, and Killip staff and families.

Student Selection

Students are identified for participation in STARS based on their individual achievement data from AIMS/DPA, DIBELS and/or 4Sight Benchmark Assessments. In order for us to make an impact on each student's academic achievement, parents/guardians need to commit to having their child attend the program regularly—Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Groups will be changed with each new trimester. Based on individual academic need, a student may be identified to participate more than one trimester.

Academic Classes

Academic classes may change from one trimester to another, but will involve 10 to 12 students per class:

  • One class per grade level in Reading (all grades will utilize the Harcourt Intervention program; grades K-2 will also use Waterford and CLIP strategies; and 3-6 will incorporate SOAR strategies);
  • One class each for grades 2-3-4 in Math (using MAC-RO model)
  • One combined 5th-6th grade class in Math.
  • Chess class for K-6th grades

Costs

There is no cost to families for STARS. The 21 st Century Community Learning Center grant pays all staffing costs for the program. Additionally, as partners in this endeavor, Title I and FACTS will provide snacks, learning materials and support activities. FACTS offers services free of charge to Killip families. FACTS participation will be limited to 150 students per day, with preference given to those currently attending FACTS and/or those attending STARS. Families with children involved in STARS are encouraged to have their children also participate in the FACTS enrichment activities immediately following STARS.
