TAG - A New Model

Last Udated September 26, 2003

During the 2001-2002 school year we at Knoles School have decided to put in place a new model for the delivery of Talented and Gifted services. This decision is based on an extensive review of the latest research on Gifted education. We believe that an inclusion model will better meet the needs of our TAG students. In an inclusion model, the TAG child is provided enriching TAG related activities within the classroom setting, on a daily basis. In this manner, the TAG child receives the enrichment he/she needs relative to current curriculum and within the homeroom setting. We believe that children are gifted all the time. This model recognizes that, and is child centered (performance based as State Standards demand) as opposed to program centered as in the pullout model. The delivery of these opportunities will occur as a matter of coarse by the classroom teacher with the aid of the TAG resource teacher, Mr. Lynch. Children will not be pulled out but instead given opportunities to be enriched within the classroom. They will still be required to meet state performance standards but will expected to exceed them. Children will have access to the TAG resource room and teacher as needed. In addition, Math, Reading/Drama, and LOGO Clubs will be available as well as a school newspaper will be published.

Classroom teachers have a great deal of new to deal with this year, with the standards based reporting system. This is a new way of looking at TAG as well, it will take some time for the difference to show. Many children are unaware that they are receiving services because the opportunities are provided as a matter of course. Its not called TAG. It’s simply a different expectation from the homeroom teacher who says, “Here is something different for you to do.” Just as we must recognize that students are different, parents must recognize that teachers are different as well. TAG will look different in each classroom as each teacher assesses his/her students needs and prepares lessons for them. Just as we modify for the disabled child, we differentiate for the gifted! It is our expectation that each TAG child will receive an enriching opportunity every day and that that opportunity will be provided in the child’s area of giftedness, and expressed in manner that reflects each child’s intelligence.
