Mr.
Hershey taught 3rd grade for a year and 5th grade for 10 years
before he moved to 6th grade science and health. He decided to
teach 6th grade because 6th graders are young adults that seem to
understand his humor, but yet are still very interested in
learning.
Mr. H's class is very active, and his teaching style incorporates
a great deal of hands-on experimenting, direct instruction, lots
of stories, and the sharing of his own learning experiences. He
is proud of the fact that all of his students have made it to the
7th grade and beyond. It always makes him feel good to see his
former students succeed years later; some academically, some
athletically, but mostly just becoming the citizens he hoped they
would be.
What really bugs Mr. Hershey is the lack of actual daily teaching
time, large class
sizes, and a growing trend of disrespect amongst children. He
finds that keeping up
with technology and our ever changing society a constant
challenge.
Mr. Hershey is a Grand Canyon and San Juan river guide in the
summer. He loves snow skiing and water skiing, trail running,
mountain biking, and flyfishing, and of course camping. One year,
Mr. H camped over 270 days; that's a lot of nights with the night
sky as a blanket! He would be a doctor if he was not a teacher,
or perhaps a full time member on the pro-leisure tour. His
mottoes are few, yet profound: It is always better to burn out
than to rust, and everything in moderation (as long as there's a
lot of it!).
