Physical and Occupational
Therapists can provide the Special Needs Student at your school
with the following:
Screening and
assessments which provide the basis for enhancing the
educational programming.
Use of
adaptive/assistive equipment and application of braces,
splints, and prosthetic devices.
Positioning for
optimal learning.
Selected
activities of daily living to enhance the educational
program.
Transitioning to a
new school or workplace.
We can also provide the student's
educational team with:
- Assistance to understand the
different considerations that must be given to children
with disabilities.
- A communication network with
educational staff, administrators, the medical community,
caregivers, and other students for a more effective
learning environment.
- Effective use of adaptive
classroom design and equipment.
- PTs- lifting, carrying, and
transfer techniques which prevent injury to students and
staff.
- OTs - selected activities for
improving oral-motor control.
Direct and consultative serve to
address specific areas of need:
For OTs
- Problems with handwriting, fine
motor and manipulation.
- Difficulties following directions
- Signs of hypersensitivity - to
noise, touch, or changes/transitions.
- Problems with buttoning, dressing,
and tying.
For PTs
- Functional motor skills within the
educational environment, including the classroom, in the
lunchroom, or in the restroom.
- Safe mobility on the playground,
field trips, and sports events.
- Removing barriers from the
student's school environment.
- Transfer techniques and
transitional movements.
We will work
closely with teachers to promote the highest level of function
possible for the student while they pursue their educational
goals
