Technology Resources for the Food & Nutrition kit - Grade 5
The activities in this module require students to analyze common foods for fats, sugars, and acids. "Free Lunch," the fourth and final activity, asks students to identify 20 lunch foods by their ingredients alone and to plan lunch menus based on a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Congratulations! You have been hired by the School Cafeteria Workers Association to create an advertisement that encourages kids to eat healthy foods - specifically, vegetables. This could be a tough job, for as you know, many people prefer the fancy advertisements and taste of foods with lower nutritional values. But you can change that.
You Are What You Eat Students evaluate their eating habits, focusing on the ways in which one assesses whether or not his or her diet is nutritious. Students work in small groups to design a menu for a healthy lunch and write a paragraph justifying their choices. For homework, students maintain a food diary over the course of a week and write a reflective essay discussing their food intake and proposing ways to make their diet healthier.
Food & the Digestive System Learn about the digestive system. Begin to explore where nutrients come from, as well as their importance for particular tasks in the body.

Daily Food Choices for Healthy Living

This best-selling program has been revised using the latest USDA research on what foods North Americans eat and what nutrients are in those foods. With input from nutrition experts, health specialists, and home economics teachers, the program teaches how to make the best food choices. The USDA Food Guide Pyramid is used to illustrate the basic food groups. The program then helps the students put the dietary guidelines into practice. Students will learn what and how much to eat from each food group to get the nutrients needed, but not too many calories or too much fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sugar, sodium or alcohol. Following the Pyramid will help keep the intake of total fat and saturated fat low and reduce chances of getting certain diseases and help maintain healthy weight. Students will also see how to control the sugar and salt in their diets and to make fewer sugar and salt choices. Special activities are provided for pregnant teens and young women.
