WHAT IS RENAISSANCE MAGENT MIDDLE SCHOOL?

Renaissance Magnet Middle School (RMMS) was established to serve as an AWARD Winning alternative choice for parents and students in Flagstaff wishing for a different educational structure at the middle school level. The school focuses upon one area of emphasis in the "Arts" or "Science and Technology". The school is comprised of a "core" teaching team that instructs classes in Science, Math, Social Studies and English. In addition, the interest of the student will be emphasized in the magnet block. This interest should form a catalyst in the core subjects providing greater relevancy to learning. The mission of RMMS is "Providing optimal educational opportunities for ALL students to prepare themselves for a productive future."

HOW ARE RMMS AND MEMS DIFFERENT?

RMMS students and faculty are lucky as we share facilities, support staff and curriculum with MEMS and are considered a component, or team, of MEMS. This means that we have access to the library, computer labs, swimming pool, and all other facilities at MEMS while maintaining our own campus with our own buildings outside the west end of the MEMS building. RMMS students tend to stay near our part of the campus at lunch, which is indicative of the sense of community shared by RMMS students. RMMS also has a 9:30 a.m. start with transportation from anywhere in the district. We are a small community of teachers and learners with the advantage of having access to all of the technology, facilities, and resources available at the big school.

HOW IS RMMS ORGANIZED?

The organization of the school is unique within the district. Classes are multi-age, with 7th and 8th grade students in all classes together. Core classes consist of Math, Social Studies, English and Science, and are block scheduled to assist instruction. These classes follow the district’s approved middle school core curriculum. Core teachers have a daily common planning period, and during this time they coordinate and integrate the curriculum as well as plan strategies for the success of each student. Classes are 90 minutes in length, and core classes follow an alternating schedule in which students attend each core class every other day for 90 minutes at a time. Extended class periods enable teachers to integrate lessons and set up time for projects and higher-level thinking tasks. The Homeroom, Assure, and Magnet classes meet daily. Students will rotate though Assure classes by 9-week blocks, enabling them to take beginning Spanish, beginning Chinese, Fitness Awareness, and Journalism. The Magnet block focuses upon the student’s area of interest, including technology, drama, science, dance and art. Please see the schedule for more clarification.
