School Health Information

Health History / Physical and Dental Exam

A health history is required on enrollment and periodically needs updating in order for the school nurses to be knowledgeable of chronic health conditions for evaluation of illness and appropriate interventions. An annual physical and dental exam is recommended for preventative health and wellness.

When to keep a child at home…..

•  If your child has a fever of 100 degrees or greater

•  Until your child is fever free without fever reducing medicationfor at least 24 hours

•  You think your child has chicken pox or other communicable disease – see your doctor for diagnosis

•  If your child has chickenpox – keep him/her home until the poxs are scabbed over

•  Your child is experiencing diarrhea and/or vomiting –keep home for 24 hours. If there is persistent stomach pain consultation should be made with your physician.

•  Your child has a “heavy” nasal congestion or a deep hacking cough with or without a fever

•  Any unexplained rash accompanied by a fever (Please contact your school nurse)

Situations where a child may attend school

•  Rash – a rash is present but there is no fever. Contact your school nurse

•  Common Cold: Your child has symptoms of a mild cold but otherwise feels well

•  Twenty four hours (24) after an antibiotic is ordered for a contagious disease such as strep or pink eye

Medication at School

Prescription medication and OTC medication that need to be taken during school hours is administered by the school nurse. Exceptions to this may be emergency medications. Consult with the school nurse on this. Parent signed consent is required for prescription and OTC medications. Both prescription and OTC medications are accepted only in the original container with proper pharmacy label. For you convenience, download the permit below.
