Peer buddies

Peer Buddies for week of 3/30

  • Hey peer buddies,

I hope you are happy and healthy, I am missing you all.  I am just checking in to see if you need anything and to offer some ideas for the next couple of months.  All of this is optional.  Here is a list of books that may be enjoyable to help with working with others with exceptionalities:

    • Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
    • This Kid Can Fly: It’s About Ability (not disability) 2016 by Aaron Philip
    • The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin by Julia Finley Mosca

I would also suggest looking into careers that work with people with exceptionalities if that is of interest to you.  Here is a website: https://www.publicservicedegrees.org/careers/people-with-disabilities/  You are all incredible with working with the students in SenComm and would benefit many if you chose a future career supporting individuals with disabilities.

Lastly, you can work on your assignment for this semester. Your end of the semester project is not required, but you can do it if you are interested.  You will need to teach others about a disability law you find interesting in your chosen mode.  You may write a paper, make a PowerPoint, video, poster, or record yourself speaking.  In your project you must describe the law put in place and how it affects people with and without disabilities.  I have listed a couple options available but you can choose another disability law not listed.  Options include:

    • Right to a free, pubic and appropriate education
    • Employers prohibited from discriminating against people with disabilities
    • Fair housing act
    • Public transportation availability
    • Telecommunications act
    • Accessibility to public places
    • The formally used “ugly law”
    • Curb/ramp and pedestrian crossing laws

For the assignment some sentence frames that may help include:

I learned about                                               .  This law states that                                       which means                                                  .  This law was put in place because                                                        .  This positively supports people with disabilities because                                                   .

In addition, I would encourage each of you to stay healthy – following the CDC guidelines but also saying mentally healthy, stay engaged with your family and friends through technology, get active each day, and participate in the kindness activities through FHS.  Please let me know if you need any anything by emailing me at sgurley@fusd1.org.

    Ms. Sarah
