Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome to 2nd Grade!
Hi, I'm Ms. Thompson and I'm so excited to be your teacher this year! This is my 20th year of teaching and almost all of those years have been in 2nd grade or in a multi-age 2nd/3rd grade or 1st/2nd grade classroom.
I grew up and went to school in and around Washington D.C. As a kid, I loved to draw and play outside. I wanted to be a vet or a scientist. I went to college at Virginia Tech and studied civil engineering. I got a second degree in Geography from the University of Oregon because I love maps and map making.
Eventually, I discovered my passion for teaching while I was leading field trips (as a volunteer) into a local wetlands with a Nature Center in Oregon and also by teaching at a local climbing gym. I was hooked! I moved to Flagstaff and got my teaching degree at NAU. I believe learning should be fun and that our classroom should be a place that fosters and embraces student inquiry. My mission is to cultivate compassionate, life long and open-minded learners.
I live with my husband and a big-eared puppy named Leo. We love to hike, bike, ski, play in rivers, sleep under the stars and spend time in our garden. If there is any spare time, I knit and make things.
"As a grownup, I want to give children the credit for everything I can: their courage, their humor, their love, their creative abilities, their abilities to be fair, their abilities to be unfair. But I do wish that we grownups would give children lots of credit for these ephemeral kind of qualities that they have."
