BSED MAED Certified Teacher and School Counselor
Ms. Michelle Powers
I have been a school counselor in FUSD since 2006. I have worked at Leupp Public School, Killip, Thomas, Kinsey, and Puente.
I strive to support and advocate for my students and their family. There is nothing more rewarding than to see a child succeed.
Seeing a child's delight and wonder makes what we do as educators so rewarding.
For info on the resources and videos used in my weekly lessons, please see my blog page.
What I do: I support students through one-on-one intervention, small group support, and I teach students lessons based on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) principles.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. (CASEL™2020)
I deliver lessons to students in 5 competency areas. They are: Self-awareness, Self-management, Social Awareness, Relationship skills, and Responsible decision-making. Within the competencies, I also incorporate the IB Learner profiles and Primary Year Program(PYP) Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills.
I support classes during their IB Program of Inquiry (POI) Units of Inquiry. As well as do mindfulness, yoga, Positive Behavior Intervention Support, and Restorative Practices.
I teach mandated district lessons on cyber security and safe use of technology, bully prevention, and mandated 2nd & 5th grade sexual abuse prevention.
I also teach lessons that teachers approach me about regarding topics they feel would benefit their class.
