    Locks and Lockers

Your student will be issued a school lock and locker after (s)he has completed and turned in a student contract. Personal locks are not allowed! If you lose your lock, please inform your P.E. instructor immediately for a replacement lock at the cost of $7. If your lock is subsequently found, you will be reimbursed. If your personal items do not fit in the locker, notify your teacher for an alternative location. The staff at SMS is not responsible for lost items. Please make sure that you lock up all personal belongings before and after class. Note:  Please use your assigned locker and lock! NO SHARING!

    Fitness Testing

The entire physical education department participates in the Fitness-gram testing. This is a pre and post assessment used by the State of Arizona in determining the fitness of all students.  Throughout the semester, students will participate in benchmark testing to measure their progress. After each testing period, students will be required to chart and graph their scores. They will also analyze their data and determine why their scores increased or decreased. After this is complete, they can then create a plan that will improve their fitness level.

If a student misses the Fitness-gram testing (pre-test, benchmarks or post-test), they will need to schedule a time to make up the test (within a week). By doing this, not only will they earn their points but the data will be valid for the benchmark analysis every three weeks.

We highly encourage all students to do their best on each test for accurate analysis!

    Dressing Out Guidelines

All students need to dress out for Physical Education class in the approved Sinagua Middle School attire. In order to earn points, the student must follow the guidelines listed below:

*T-shirt: SMS PE uniform shirt. Students are NOT allowed to wear sweatshirts over the PE shirt. Exception: Inclement weather during outdoor activities.

*Shorts: SMS PE uniform shorts. Students are NOT allowed to wear shorts of other material or other shorts underneath the PE shorts. Spandex compression shorts ok.

*Socks: Should be worn at all times with appropriate shoes.

*Shoes: Athletic shoes are required at all times and must be worn properly. Any other shoe worn will be counted as a non-dress and the student’s grade will be altered.

    * To participate daily and give your best effort! Points will be earned based on participation and Homecourt Advantage.

General guidelines for NOT dressing out:

It is our intention at SMS that all students are successful. If a student forgets a uniform, please review the policy below:

    • Students may borrow a uniform to participate in PE.  The student must provide their student I.D. for collateral. Once the student returns the borrowed uniform back to teacher, they will receive their I.D.
    • 1st Borrow is a warning.
    • 2nd Borrow is a minor school infraction.
    • 3rd Borrow is a 2nd minor infraction and parents will be contacted.
    • 4th Borrow the student will be assigned TLC.
    • When a student refuses to dress out or wear a borrow, all daily participation points will be lost and the student will be sent to the Responsible Thinking Room.

    Make Ups

If your student is absent from class for any reason other than a school activity, they will not receive any points for that day.  Students are expected to make up participation points, tests, projects and any other assignments that they missed upon their return. Again, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missed work from the teacher upon their return!

    Medical Issues

If for any reason you have a medical issue that will keep you from participating in physical education for that day, you must have a note from home or the doctor. This note must be written by the parent or doctor and must include what your ailment is, how long you are expected to be out of activity, and must have a signature. A note written in student handwriting will not be accepted. Since this is a participation class, it is hard to make up these points, so please limit your time out of class for real medical emergencies. With a medical note, the student is still required to dress out in appropriate PE attire and they are required to do an alternate activity to earn their participation points. This rule applies to all medical issues.

Please contact your student’s PE teacher immediately to discuss any medical issues (asthma, diabetes, surgery, etc) that may impede your student from participating.

If your child is unable to participate in Physical activities for an extended period of time, administration will make arrangements for your child to continue to receive credit during this unfortunate time by re-scheduling your child until they are once again healthy enough to participate in physical activities.
