Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Whitney Tapia
My name is Whitney Tapia. I have two children Chase (9) and Carter (3). In my free time, I enjoy playing games with my kids, adventuring outdoors, and cooking.
I am deeply connected and dedicated to Northern Arizona. I was born and raised in Flagstaff; attending Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) schools from kindergarten through high school. I earned my Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and principal certification from Northern Arizona University.
For over a decade, I have worked as an elementary school teacher, primarily in FUSD. For the past two years, I taught education courses at NAU. I was selected as the 2015 Coconino County Teacher of the Year and as a Semi-Finalist for the 2016 Arizona Teacher of the Year.
Environmental education is a passion of mine, and I have the pleasure of serving as Board Secretary for Willow Bend Environmental Education Center. I work to integrate environmental and place-based educational practices in my teaching. Another passion of mine is working with educators and community members to bring culturally responsive practices to our schools. The very best schools are spaces where students and families are able to bring who they are, and where power is shared so that decision making is representative of all. I am committed to partnering with community and valuing students’ stories. I am excited to be teaching and learning as a member of the Puente De Hozho community.
