College Board Information For AP Classes and Testing

  • 25th March 2020

    Dear FHS Parents,

As schools close across the nation due to COVID-19, The College Board has determined that all Advanced Placement (AP) exams will be held online this semester. To accommodate this change and to prepare students for their exams, FHS will be working together with families, students, and teachers to address this unique situation. Below is an overview of changes to the exam, availability of resources, and AP Capstone Presentation information.

How Will AP Exams Be Administered?

The College Board, which administers the exams, announced that traditional face-to-face exams will not take place for the 2019-2020 school year. Instead, students will take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. Educator-led development committees are currently selecting exam questions that will be administered. Students will be given two testing dates to choose from. Students will be able to use whatever device they have to take the exam including their iPads, computers, or cellphones. If a student wishes to take the exam on paper, they may do so then send a photo of their completed exam for grading. The full exam schedule, specific free-response question types that will be on each AP exam, and additional testing details will be available by April 3rd, according to the College Board.

    What Content Will Be Covered?

Due to many schools losing instructional time as a result of COVID-19, the exams will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class by early March. Attached to this letter is what the College Board has provided thus far as to what content will be included on each exam and what dates exams will be offered. Updates will be provided via the College Board website found here no later than April 3rd.

How Can My Student Prepare For Their Exams?

Beginning on Wednesday, March 25, students can attend free, live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. These courses:

    • Are optional, mobile-friendly, and can be used alongside any resources teachers may provide.
    • Will be available on-demand, so students can access them any time.
    • Will focus on reviewing the skills and concepts from the first 75% of the course. There will also be some supplementary lessons including topics from the final 25% of the course.

These videos can be found at the AP Youtube Channel and the daily schedule for all 32 courses can be found here. Please note that YouTube may not be available on FUSD managed iPads but will be accessible on any personal device.

Additionally, teachers are encouraged to provide review materials electronically to students. It is imperative that students make contact with their teachers in the upcoming days to ensure their teacher has their correct contact information to be able to disseminate any review materials.

What If I Want A Refund?

If your student no longer plans on taking an AP exam they have already registered and paid for, the ability to receive a refund is dependent on whether or not the exam was paid using tax-credits. If paid for using tax-credits, you will still be able to include that write off in your taxes thus will not receive a refund from FHS. If not paid with tax credits, the cost of the exam will be deducted from your owed fees to the FHS bookstore. Mr. Cullen will work with every family to ensure payments are taken care of fairly. Please send an email to Mr. Cullen detailing your students name, ID number, and exams you wish to have refunded and he will reach out to you to discuss refund options.

What Is Happening With The AP Senior Capstone Projects?

For students participating in the Senior Capstone Project, Northern Arizona University has moved the Undergraduate Symposium online! If your student is doing a Capstone, please have them check Google Classroom for more updates.

We ask that all families with students who have signed up and paid for an AP exam this school year fill out THIS FORM by Monday March 30th to confirm that you have received this message and indicate your students’ ability to take their AP exams from home.

We appreciate your understanding during this unprecedented time and look forward to any questions you may have. Feel free to email the FHS AP Academy team members below:
