Coconino High School Authorized as IB World School
Coconino High School has officially been authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the rigorous college preparatory IB Diploma Programme beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. The authorization is a culmination of a multi-year planning effort to bring the prestigious program to Northern Arizona.
“We are incredibly excited by this opportunity and we know our students are prepared for the challenge,” shares Coconino High School Principal Stacie Zanzucchi. “It is a real testament to our team and our district to be recognized and trusted in this manner by the International Baccalaureate Organization.”
The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
“This program is different from our current offerings as the curriculum is designed to be interdisciplinary and promote connections between all of the subjects,” says Coconino High School IB Coordinator and teacher Chelsea Drey. “As a teacher, I am excited that my students are going to be able to use this curriculum to participate in a learning community focused on connecting local educational opportunities with a global perspective all while preparing them for success upon graduation.”
Thus far, 18 students have already registered for the IB Diploma Programme with an additional 39 students electing to take at least one IB course.
