Flagstaff Unified School District Announces Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Marshall Elementary School
July 16, 2024
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Flagstaff Unified School District is pleased to announce the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Marshall Elementary School. The event will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the new Marshall Elementary construction site, located at the lower level by the field.
The ceremony will include speeches by Marshall Elementary School Principal Janelle Reasor and FUSD Superintendent Michael Penca. A barbecue will follow at 4 p.m.
The construction of the new Marshall Elementary School is funded by the community’s support. In November 2022, FUSD voters approved Proposition 447 Override and Proposition 448 Bond, which allocated $100 million to address the district’s needs. The $25 million designated for the replacement, rebuild, and relocation of Marshall Elementary School is part of this funding.
Marshall Elementary School, built in 1952, required extensive repairs and system replacements to meet next-generation learning needs, especially for its magnet and special education programs. The FUSD Governing Board decided to build the new Marshall Elementary School on the site of the former Flagstaff Middle School property. This decision addresses safety concerns, including student crossings on Bonito Street, the location within the Rio de Flag floodplain, and insufficient parking.
The demolition of the former Flagstaff Middle School began on April 18, 2024, to make way for the new Marshall Elementary School. The middle school, which opened in the early 1970s and closed in 2010, served as a hub of education and community engagement for decades.
FUSD invites parents and community members to join in this momentous occasion and celebrate the beginning of a new era for Marshall Elementary School.
