Dedication of the Traditional Navajo Hooghan at Flagstaff High School
September 18, 2024
Flagstaff Unified School District celebrated the completion of a traditional Navajo Hooghan, inspired by Justina Slim, an FUSD graduate from 2019.
The Hooghan will serve as a space for Navajo cultural teachings, education, and counseling, empowering students and promoting their well-being. It will also integrate Diné language and traditional activities into our curriculum.
The traditional Navajo blessing ceremony and dedication, attended by students from both Flagstaff High School and Coconino High Schools, along with dignitaries from the FUSD Governing Board, Coconino County, the City of Flagstaff, and Native Americans for Community Action, Inc., was a powerful celebration of culture and community.
This project, made possible by FUSD staff, administrators, the Indian Education Support Program, and many local partners, is a meaningful addition to our school’s mission to honor and support our diverse community.
