Reading and Writing

Your child will learn to:

  • Read and spell 100 high-frequency (commonly-used) words
  • Read 1st grade materials accurately and fluently (should sound like natural speech)
  • Learn new words by thinking about the context of the story and looking at pictures
  • Recognize upper and lower case letters and the sounds they make
  • Identify rhyming words
  • Make word families from simple words (for example; take, make, bake, rake, cake, lake)
  • Learn vocabulary (base words, compound words, contractions)
  • Retell stories to show understanding of the main idea and the characters
  • Predict the outcome of stories
  • Answer who, what, where, and when questions
  • Follow simple steps in writing process; creating ideas, writing a first draft, revising and publishing
  • Use correct grammar, punctuation and simple sentence structure
  • Write a simple “story” with a beginning, middle and end 

Mathematics and Science 

Your child will learn to: 

  • Identify, read and place in order whole numbers to 100
  • Identify place value to 100 (tens and ones)
  • Identify ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) through 10th
  • Learn problem solving strategies
  • Learn to add all numbers 0 – 20
  • Learn to subtract all numbers 0 – 20
  • Add and subtract one and two-digit numbers
  • Learn and interpret simple graphs
  • Conduct simple probability activities
  • Learn to use simple tools (ruler, thermometer, magnifying glass)
  • Make predictions about patterns
  • Predict the results of an experiment
  • Identify basic animal and plant parts
  • Identify ways that people in human and animal families are alike and different
  • Study balance and motion
  • Compare liquids and solids
  • Identify and compare objects in the sky (sun, moon, birds, airplanes, etc.)
  • Learn basic weather facts

Social Studies

First grade introduces the development of civilizations and cultures around the world – using Egypt and North America as examples.

Technology, Art, Music and PE

Your child will learn to:

  • Use technology safely and effectively for research, learning, communication and exploration
  • Understand the value of art and music throughout history
  • Identify the meaning or ideas communicated through art and music
  • Develop motor skills
  • Establish habits for a healthy and active lifestyle
  • Foster positive communication and interaction with peers
