Welcome to Second Grade Academics!

Reading and Writing 

Your child will learn to:

  • Read and spell 200 high-frequency (commonly-used) words
  • Recognize and use compound words such as babysitter, lunchtime and everyday, and contractions such as can’t, it’s and aren’t
  • Read common and multi-syllable words quickly and easily
  • Read second grade materials accurately, fluently and with expression
  • Identify sounds in words (syllables, consonants and vowels
  • Retell stories in correct sequence to show understanding of the facts, main ideas, characters and setting
  • Follow written, multi-step directions
  • Show comprehension of reading by asking relevant questions, describing specific character, and identifying the cause and effect of events
  • Recognize informational vs. literary text
  • Increase understanding and use of the writing process:  creating ideas, writing a detailed first draft, revising and proofreading
  • Use correct grammar, punctuation and sentences that support a topic
  • Use writing for various purposes – to communicate, express feelings, share information, research, directions, etc. 

Mathematics and Science

Your child will learn to:

  • Identify, read write and place in order whole numbers to 1000
  • Identify place values (i.e., 528 = 5 hundreds, 2 tens, 8 ones)
  • Use money values through $1.00
  • Tell time to the minute
  • Demonstrate fluency of addition and subtraction facts
  • Add three-digit numbers; subtract two digit numbers

Social Studies

Your student will study:

  • The emergence of the United States as a nation
  • The development of civilizations and cultures focusing on Asia
  • Map construction and interpretation

Technology, Art, Music and PE 

Your child will learn to:

  • Understand the value of art and music throughout history
  • Identify the meaning or ideas communicated through art and music
  • Use vocabulary and skills needed to create or perform
  • Develop motor skills
  • Establish habits for a healthy and active lifestyle
  • Foster positive communication and interaction with peers
  • Use technology safely and effectively for research, learning, communication and exploration
