Reading

Your child will learn to:

 

  • Recite the alphabet
  • Recognize both upper and lower case letters
  • Correctly say each letter’s sound
  • Learn basic concepts of print:
    • holding a book correctly
    • tracking words left to right
    • reading from the top to the bottom of the page
    • identifying the front and back cover and title page
    • understanding the correlation between spoken and printed words
  • Identify initial and final sounds in spoken words
  • Identify rhyming and non-rhyming words (sun/run vs. Sun/man)
  • Determine word meanings from the way they’re used in a sentence
  • Make story predictions based on the title, cover, pictures and text
  • Identify characters, setting and the key events in a story
  • Retell stories in correct sequence
  • Follow two and three-step directions using picture clues
  • Identify facts in non-fiction text

 

Writing 

Your child will learn to:

 

  • Generate story ideas as a class and draw pictures to match
  • Work as a group to draft a story
  • Write from left to right and show space between words
  • Write the alphabet in both upper and lower case letters
  • Write first and last name on school papers

 

Mathematics

Your child will learn to:

 

  • Count to 20
  • Identify and write numbers through 20 (in or out of order)
  • Identify symbols +, -, =, and learn simple addition and subtraction
  • Understand the concepts of above/below/between/smaller/larger/longer/shorter
  • Identify, copy and create models of various shapes
  • Sort objects by size, color and shape
  • Create a variety of simple patterns

 

Students will also be evaluated on the following items:

 

  • Use of scissors to cut simple shapes
  • Hop on each foot and skip or gallop
  • Catch and throw a ball or beanbag
  • Identify body parts (head, shoulder, chin, arms, elbow, wrist, hips, waist, legs, knees, ankle and feet)
  • Identify colors (red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, brown, pink, gray, black and white)
  • Accurately state first and last name, age and birthday, address and phone
