Welcome to Fine Art

  • Art I: This is an entry level course that will introduce students to the basic fundamentals of art. This course focuses on learning how to draw through the use of techniques such as contour, freehand, perspective, and shading. Elements and principles of design as well as the study of artists throughout history are emphasized. This course fulfills .5 credit of fine arts for college admissions. Art 1 is a pre-requisite for the Advanced Art/Drawing and Painting course.

    Drawing and Painting – (Prerequisite: Completion of Art I): Advanced Art/Drawing and Painting is designed to give the student a more in depth experience in a variety of drawing and painting techniques such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, tempera, acrylic, watercolor, and oils. Knowledge and effective use of skillful techniques that focus on the elements and principles of design, as well as knowledge of influential artists throughout history is emphasized and studied. *Fee required.

    Sculpture & Ceramics: The student learns skills in various sculpture and ceramics techniques. Students perform at their own proficiency level in each area, and increase their knowledge of basic design and art history. Potter’s wheel, glazing, hand-building and decorating techniques are included. *Fee required.

    AP Studio Art – (Prerequisite: Minimum of Painting and Drawing and teacher recommendation): AP Studio Art has been developed to accommodate serious art students who have expressed an interest in completing the AP Drawing Portfolio or the AP 2-D Design Portfolio. Through studio practice, application of design concepts, and informed decision-making, these students will assemble a body of artwork that demonstrates a high level of quality and growth over time of content, technique, and process. Students will investigate all three parts of their portfolios as required by the AP College Board: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. All artwork will be documented throughout the year by digital photos and PowerPoint. *Fee required.

    Concert Choir: This is a major performing choir representing the school. Four-part music is prepared for several concerts, festivals and a spring tour. The class is designed for continued development of all vocal skills in preparation of four or more part music. Performance attendance is required. Purchase of uniform may be required. ALL PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. Student will be responsible for purchase of performance attire and equipment as well as cleaning fees. The course may be repeated for credit. $125.00 Participation fee required for AIA activities.

    Choraliers – (Auditions Required): This is a small select vocal ensemble that specializes in a variety of musical styles. This group performs not only at the same festivals, tours and programs, as the larger vocal group, but it is also called upon to represent the school for special appearances. Performance attendance is required. Uniform may be required. ALL PERFORMANCES AND REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY. $125.00 Participation fee required for AIA activities.

    Marching Band/ Concert Band: This class is scheduled only as a year‐long class. The Marching Band/Concert Band class fulfills graduation requirements for Fine Arts as well as PE and may be repeated for elective credit. This course is designed for those students who have at least 2 years of an instrumental background in a middle school program and are interested in continuing towards mastery of a wind or percussion instrument. This unique course is considered a hybrid course between an academic and an athletic. The Flagstaff Eagle Pride Marching Band is part of the FHS Athletic Department as well as the Performing Arts department. This means students will have commitments outside of class that will impact their grade including after school rehearsals, concerts, and summer Band Camp. These commitments are mandatory to be in the class. This course may involve outside costs if either renting or buying an instrument. A limited number of school instruments are available for rental. Please contact instructor for details. Students will be charged a school fee for equipment and uniform needs. As part of the FHS Athletic Department, the class will pay the AIA fee of $125.00 per student. This fee covers travel costs and entry fees for competitions. Students will continue towards mastery of basic techniques of any band instrument as well as continue practice on note reading, rhythm, and music theory. *Fee required.

    Symphonic Orchestra – Strings: This class is scheduled only as a year‐long class. The Symphonic Orchestra class fulfills graduation requirements for Fine Arts and may be repeated for elective credit. This course is designed for those students who have at least 2 years of an instrumental background in a middle school program and are interested in continuing towards mastery of an orchestral string instrument. Strings: Violins, Violas, Cellos, Basses This course may involve outside costs if either renting or buying an instrument. A limited number of school instruments are available for rental. Please contact instructor for details. Students will be charged a school fee for equipment, uniform, and travel needs. Students will continue towards mastery of basic techniques of any stringed instrument as well as continue practice on note reading, rhythm, and music theory.

    Symphonic Orchestra – Winds and Percussion Pre-Requisite: Must have 1 year of Marching Band/Concert Band and must complete an entry audition: This class is scheduled only as a year‐long class and only offered to students in grades 10-12. This course is audition only. The Symphonic Orchestra class fulfills graduation requirements for Fine Arts and may be repeated for elective credit. This course is designed for those students who have at least 2 years of an instrumental background in a middle school program and are interested in continuing towards mastery of an orchestral wind or percussion instrument. Winds and Percussion Flutes, Clarinets, Oboes, Bassoons, Trumpets, French Horns, Low Brass, Concert Percussion This course may involve outside costs if either renting or buying an instrument. A limited number of school instruments are available for rental. Please contact instructor for details. Students will be charged a school fee for equipment, uniform, and travel needs. All performances and rehearsals are required to pass the course. Students will continue towards mastery of basic techniques of any symphonic instrument as well as continue practice on note reading, rhythm, and music theory.

    Jazz Band: This class is scheduled only as a year‐long class. This course is offered as a ZERO HOUR before school. The Jazz Band class fulfills graduation requirements for Fine Arts and may be repeated for elective credit. This course is designed for those students who have at least 2 years of an instrumental background in a middle school program and are interested in continuing towards mastery of a jazz instrument. Jazz Instruments Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Advanced Guitar, Drum Set, Advanced Piano This course will involve outside costs if either renting or buying an instrument. A limited number of school instruments are available for rental. Please contact instructor for details. Students will be charged a school fee for equipment, uniform, and travel needs. All performances and rehearsals are required to pass the course. Students will continue towards mastery of basic techniques of any jazz instrument as well as continue practice on note reading, rhythm, and music theory. 

    Color Guard: This course is a year-long class that works alongside the Flagstaff Eagle Pride Marching Band. The class includes basic Color Guard terminology, basic to advanced flag and rifle technique, basic dance, and performance practices. This unique course is considered a hybrid course between an academic and an athletic. The Flagstaff High School Color Guard is part of the FHS Athletic Department as well as the Performing Arts Department. This means students will have commitments outside of class that will impact their grade including after school rehearsals, competitions, and Summer Camp. This course will involve outside costs. Students will be charged a school fee for equipment and uniform/costume needs. As part of the FHS Athletic Department, the class will pay the AIA fee of $125.00 per student (cap of $200 for multiple students). This fee covers travel costs and entry fees for competitions.

    Piano Keyboard: Piano Keyboard is a year-long course focusing on the development of keyboard playing skills. This course covers a broad range of skills and knowledge designed to assist the student to become a life-long musician for personal enjoyment. Topics include playing technique, music theory and notation, performance skills, improvisation, styles, music history, ensemble playing, and listening development. Students are expected to attend outside performances in the community and those put on by their classmates. No experience is necessary, but students with previous experience of all levels can be included in this class. More advanced students will work on personalized goals and repertoire.

    Theater Arts: Theatre Arts is a yearlong course that introduces the basics of theatre production. The course includes basic terminology and techniques that are put into practice with supporting roles of stage hands and lighting/sound technology. Elements of teamwork, evaluation, scene work, acting, characterization, play production, theatre history, games and improvisation are incorporated throughout the year. This course is not involved with the FHS Drama Club or any theatrical productions at Flagstaff High School. *Fee required.
