    Application Process: To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households can conveniently fill out the application online at School Lunch App. Alternatively, applications are available at the FUSD Food Service office located at 3285 E Sparrow Avenue in Flagstaff and at most FUSD schools.

    Families are required to submit only one application for all children in the household. The information provided on the application will be used to determine eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by school or program officials.

    Please note: We will process your application within 10 business days of receiving it. In the meantime, please be prepared to pay for meals.

    If your student(s) only attend one of our Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools (Killip, Kinsey, Leupp, Marshall, Summit, and Thomas), it is not necessary to apply for meal benefits. All students at these schools will receive school meals at no cost. If you have students at both CEP and non-CEP schools, please include all students on the meal application.

    • Eligibility Verification and Appeals: Applications for free or reduced-price benefits must contain complete eligibility information as per the application instructions. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the determination may discuss the decision informally with the determining official. To formally appeal for a hearing on the decision, they may contact Steven Rhode at 928-527-6010 or srhode@fusd1.org .
    • Notification of Eligibility: Households receiving assistance from programs like SNAP, FDPIR, or TANF may be notified of their children’s eligibility for free meals without needing to submit an application. If any children were not listed on the notice or if a household did not receive one, they should contact the Food and Nutrition department to ensure all eligible children receive benefits.
    • Special Categorical Eligibility: Children categorized as foster, homeless, migrant, or runaway may also qualify for free meals. Families should contact the Food and Nutrition department if any eligible children are not listed on their notice of eligibility.
    • Changes in Household Circumstances: Families are encouraged to notify the school if their household experiences changes such as unemployment or an increase in household size. Such changes may affect eligibility for meal benefits.
    • Declining Benefits: Households notified of their children’s eligibility must contact the school if they choose to decline the free meal benefits.

    Contact Information: For more information about the application process, eligibility criteria, or to obtain an application, please contact the Food and Nutrition Department

  • We want to keep all children safe and healthy. If your student has a special dietary need, please read below.

    FUSD must provide modifications for children with disabilities on a case-by-case basis, only when requests are supported by a written statement from a State licensed healthcare professional. (In Arizona these professionals are listed as: Dentists, Homeopathic Physicians, Naturopathic Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Osteopathic Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Physicians.)

    Click here for a Medical Statement you may use: Medical Statement form

     The medical statement must include the following:

    • Information about the child's physical or mental impairment that is sufficient to allow FUSD to understand how it restricts the child's diet;
    • An explanation of what must be done to accommodate the child;
    • The food or foods to be omitted and recommended alternatives, if appropriate.

    In the case of food allergies, this means identifying the food or foods to be omitted and recommending alternatives. In other cases, more information may be required. For example, if the child would require caloric modifications or the substitution of a liquid nutritive formula to accommodate a disability, this information must be included in the statement. The medical statement should be shared with both your school nurse as well as food service personnel.

    Contact your school nurse with questions or concerns.

    According to the ADA, most physical and mental impairments will constitute a disability. This includes conditions that impair immune, digestive, neurological and bowel functions, as well as many others. General health concerns, such as a parent's preference that a child eat a gluten-free diet because the parent believes it is healthier for the child, are not disabilities and do not require a modification. All disability considerations must be viewed on a case-by-case basis. A more comprehensive discussion can be found on page 5 of the USDA memo (9/26/17) attached here:

  • Why is breakfast important?

    A Hungry Child is Not a Happy Child.
    Children who eat breakfast have increased alertness and improved moods throughout the morning, making for a better learning experience in the classroom.

    School Breakfasts are the Best!
    On average, school breakfasts are more nutritious than breakfasts eaten elsewhere.

    Kids that eat #schoolbreakfast are more likely to consume whole grains and fruits at breakfast than kids that eat breakfast elsewhere. Learn more @TeamNutrition School Breakfast Materials

    EAT BREAKFAST AT SCHOOL!

    ornings can be really crazy…the alarm doesn’t go off…the kids don’t want to get up…there’s no time to eat breakfast before the bus comes…or they’re just not ready to eat. Or maybe your teenager grabs a can of soda and a candy bar on the way to school. If this sounds like your house, we have good news for you.

    Breakfast is served at school! School breakfast will give your child a healthy start to the day.  A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can learn more in class. Breakfast has vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body.

    Breakfast at school is affordable, too. If you qualify for free and reduced price meals, you also qualify for the breakfast program, with no additional paperwork. You can’t find a healthy breakfast at such a low cost anywhere else.

    Help your child start the day right with school breakfast!
