6th Avenue Closure and Detour Beginning Oct. 13

Posted Date: 10/06/25 (11:00 AM)

October 6, 2025

Dear FUSD Families and Staff,

The City of Flagstaff continues to make great progress on the Spruce Wash Flood Mitigation projects. Beginning Monday, October 13, construction will start on the Killip Basin Outlet Structure. To complete this work, 6th Avenue will be closed between 1st Street and Main Street for approximately one month (weather permitting).

What to Expect:

  • Detour routes will be in place along East Street, 4th Avenue, 3rd Street, and Dortha Avenue to maintain access for businesses, schools, and Killip Elementary within the closure area.

  • Sidewalk access will remain open throughout the closure.

  • Motorists and pedestrians are asked to follow the posted detour signage.

  • Please see the map below for the closed section of 6th Avenue and the detour route.

About the Project:
The Killip Basin Outlet Structure is a storm drain system that connects the Killip Elementary School Regional Detention Basins to an existing pipe on Main Street. This serves as a secondary outlet for larger storm events, helping prevent water from overtopping the basins and providing long-term flood protection for the area.

The City of Flagstaff is nearing the completion of this important flood mitigation work and sincerely appreciates your patience during construction. These improvements will help protect homes, schools, and businesses from post-wildfire flooding impacts.

For questions or additional information regarding the project, please call the project hotline at 928-255-5153 or email info@museumfloodprojects.com. More details and resources are available at www.museumfloodprojects.com.

Thank you for your understanding and support as this important project moves forward.
