Staying Healthy This Fall – Every Day Counts at FUSD

Dear FUSD Families,

As we welcome the fall season, we also enter the start of respiratory illness season — a time when regular attendance can be challenging. It is important to keep our students healthy and learning in school every day. Regular attendance builds strong academic foundations and positive habits that last a lifetime.

Here are a few reminders to help your student stay healthy and engaged this October:

  • Practice healthy habits: Encourage healthy habits such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, keeping backpacks clean, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, avoiding sharing food or drinks, and getting enough rest each night.

  • Stay up to date with healthcare and vaccinations: Regular checkups and vaccinations help keep students healthy and ready to learn. Annual wellness visits are a great time to track growth, discuss nutrition, and get flu shots or other recommended immunizations that prevent the spread of illness.

  • Know when to keep your child home: Students should stay home when they have a fever (100.4°F or higher), vomiting, diarrhea, heavy nasal or respiratory congestion, or other contagious symptoms. Once they are fever-free and feeling better for 24 hours without taking fever reducing medications, they can return to school.

  • Don’t use up all of your absences early! The school year has just begun, and we want every student to have the opportunity to participate fully in classroom learning, projects, and activities. Students are considered chronically absent when they miss about 10% of the school year — that’s roughly 18 days, or just two days a month. Even a few absences here and there can add up quickly and make it harder for students to keep up with lessons, routines, and friendships.
