IB Computer Science Standard Level (SL) IBEL101

The IB DP Computer science SL course requires an understanding of the fundamental concepts of computational thinking as well as knowledge of how computers and other digital devices operate. The course, underpinned by conceptual thinking, draws on a wide spectrum of knowledge, and enables and empowers innovation, exploration and the acquisition of further knowledge. Students study how computer science interacts with and influences cultures, society and how individuals and societies behave, and the ethical issues involved. During the course the student will develop computational solutions. This will involve the ability to:
- identify a problem or unanswered question
- design, prototype and test a proposed solution
- liaise with clients to evaluate the success of the proposed solution and make recommendations for future developments.

Year one in Digital Media is an exploratory project based learning environment offering students the opportunity to gain experience in the medium of visual communication. In year one, we teach the fundamentals of film & video production, website and graphic design. Participants will find the class and the program, a springboard to a possible future in some of the most highly sought after careers of the 21st Century. They will approach these opportunities with diverse technology skills that are versatile and can be applied to a number of professions. We operate in a state of the art computer lab with the most current industry adopted software. These include, the Adobe CS6 Master Collection, Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign. For video production, we use Final Cut Pro. We finish the year by researching various website content management systems, search engine optimization and create a basic website with Wordpress.
DE Film, TV, & Graphics II (with Dual Enrollment option) CT141A/B

Year two in Digital Media builds on year one (Digital Media I is a prerequisite) and provides students a dual enrollment prospect that allows them to gain college credit while in the class. We delve deeper into visual communication including film & video production techniques, graphic and website design with emphasis on composition, color theory, principles of design and production. The class model is a multimedia business organization structure. Students continuing the program choose an area of interest and work within a department. Departments include, Marketing, Graphic Design, Video Production and Website development. The curriculum is differentiated according to departments and each department is responsible for creating content for a specific entity. These are, Panther TV (a school based video blog website), providing support maintaining the school website, creating graphic design projects for Coconino High School, as well as, support and layout of the school newspaper, The Coconino Press. These projects will provide real world experience and in turn will help students to either launch into a post high school career or allow them to work in a multimedia field while in college. This is a dual enrollment course. We partner with CCC allowing students to earn college credit.

Digital Media year I & II are prerequisites for Digital Media III. Students who continue to progress through the program are laying a foundation for a future in the multimedia, graphic arts and media specialist fields. The diversity of the skill set acquired in the program is not limited to these industries. The additional business operation acumen, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation aspects are some of the most sought after skills in the professional world. During year three, students will continue to develop skills in their desired area of focus while managing the departments and projects underway in Digital Media II. Encouraging and developing management skills for both department and school wide projects is at the center of this valuable learning experience. Students have begun and will continue to create a resume/personal portfolio website, which can be used as a resource for submitting to a college program or for acquiring employment post high school.
