Digital Media 1 CT175A/B

Prerequisite: Film and TV I
The Digital Communication instructional program prepares students to gather, process, and deliver news through a variety of print and online formats, including newspapers, magazines, journals, annual publications, weblogs (blogs) and other traditional and new media platforms. Students who successfully complete the Digital Communication program’s coherent sequence of instruction will develop an in-depth understanding of news writing and editing, reporting, photojournalism, page layout, graphic design, media management, product distribution and delivery and specialized equipment operation and maintenance. Digital Communication students will explore the history and societal and economic impact of the digital communication industry and will examine legal and ethical considerations and business best practices unique to digital communication and related industries. Throughout the Digital Communication instructional program, students learn and practice valuable skills using real-world computer hardware and news-gathering equipment as well as industry standard image editing, graphic design and page layout software to create professional-grade media products.

IB Computer Science Standard Level (SL) IBEL101

The IB DP Computer science SL course requires an understanding of the fundamental concepts of computational thinking as well as knowledge of how computers and other digital devices operate. The course, underpinned by conceptual thinking, draws on a wide spectrum of knowledge, and enables and empowers innovation, exploration and the acquisition of further knowledge. Students study how computer science interacts with and influences cultures, society and how individuals and societies behave, and the ethical issues involved. During the course the student will develop computational solutions. This will involve the ability to:
- identify a problem or unanswered question
- design, prototype and test a proposed solution
- liaise with clients to evaluate the success of the proposed solution and make recommendations for future developments.

Film, TV, & Graphics I (with Dual Enrollment option) CT140A/B

College & Career Readiness course in Film/TV production and Graphic Design. Throughout the class, a minimum of 51% of instruction/learning time will be “hands-on” in a lab-based setting. In addition to covering fundamental technical skills in these fields, this course integrates coherent and rigorous academic content (reading, writing, math, science, etc.) in support of improving students’ academic skills. Emphasis is placed on common threads between the disciplines: writing, visual composition (video framing, graphic design and electronic page layout), and application of the principles and elements of design as they relate to each content area. This class is a springboard to an array of media careers, as well as college and university programs in related disciplines. We employ diverse technology and versatile design skills applicable to numerous professions. In our up-to-date computer lab, we use industry-standard software including Adobe Premiere, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Students can take industry software certification tests at no additional student cost. The curriculum is integrated with our Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO), SkillsUSA, and through this, further aligns with industry standards and practice.
Dual Enrollment: This class has DE (Dual Enrollment) partnerships with BOTH Coconino Community College and Yavapai College, allowing them to earn up to 9 college credits.

Film, TV, & Graphics II (with Dual Enrollment option) CT141A/B

College & Career Readiness course in Film/TV production and Graphic Design. Throughout the class, a minimum of 51% of instruction/learning time will be “hands-on” in a lab-based setting. In addition to covering fundamental technical skills in these fields, this course integrates coherent and rigorous academic content (reading, writing, math, science, etc.) in support of improving students’ academic skills. Students may take industry software certification tests at no additional student cost. The curriculum is integrated with our Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO), SkillsUSA, and through this, further aligns with industry standards and practice. The class structure is the only way to describe the learning content, and is based on industry integration via work-based learning, mentorship, and internship. Film, TV & Graphics II builds on prerequisite Film, TV & Graphics I, delving deeper into visual communication including film & TV production techniques, graphic & website design stressing composition, color theory, and design principles & elements. The structure is a multimedia business model. Students emphasize an area of interest, and work within departments via differentiated curriculum where students create content for a specific entity such as KCHS studios (a school-based news media outlet), streaming of CHS sporting events, producing community client videos, conceiving and creating a short film, and creating school- and client- commissioned graphic design projects. This real-world experience enables students to pursue a media career or further collegiate study. Students who pass both Media 1 and 2 take a state-accredited program completer’s exam which, if passed, earns a certificate indicating they are “Ready-to-work-day-one” in film and television production. Students may return for optional levels 3 and 4 to seek additional leadership, career/technical skill development, and college dual enrollment opportunities

College & Career Readiness course in Film/TV production and Graphic Design. Throughout the class, a minimum of 51% of instruction/learning time will be “hands-on” in a lab-based setting. In addition to covering fundamental technical skills in these fields, this course integrates coherent and rigorous academic content (reading, writing, math, science, etc.) in support of improving students’ academic skills. Students may take industry software certification tests at no additional student cost. The class is a refinement and opportunity to develop specialization and leadership in media work-based learning experiences. The curriculum is integrated with our Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO), SkillsUSA, and through this, further aligns with industry standards and practice. Student continue to work within “business departments” via differentiated curriculum where students create content for a specific entity such as KCHS studios (a school-based news media outlet), streaming of CHS sporting events, producing community client videos, conceiving and creating a short film, and creating school- and client- commissioned graphic design projects. This real-world experience enables students to pursue a media career or further collegiate study. Level 3 and 4 students are expected to step into a leadership role. Alternatively (or in addition) they may specialize while proactively seeking out project commitments and learning opportunities. Here they develop project management skills similar to those found in AGILE or Lean Six-Sigma. They may even work with our Work-Based Learning class to seek out industry internships for class credit. The class will cement leadership and professional skills relevant to the industry, explore emerging trends, and further enhance student understanding of industry best-practice and real-world issues. Student have the opportunity to turn those skills into a viable income via future employment prospects, or to further their education beyond secondary school with a rock-solid media portfolio and excellent, relevant experience for their resume. Students that choose the dual enrollment options must seek commitments that require the skills learned in video editing and production processes.
