Art AR50

This course may be the beginning of an art major or an exploratory course for any student at any grade level. It offers an opportunity to work with various media such as pencil, ink, charcoal, pastels, acrylics, and watercolors. Elements of design and art history are emphasized. This class qualifies as a fine art credit.
Drawing & Painting I AR60

Drawing and Painting is designed to give the student more in-depth experience in a variety of paints including but not limited to acrylic, airbrush, oil, and watercolor, experience painting on different surfaces, drawing in pencil, and chalk or pastels. The students are expected to develop, maintain and experiment in the above areas with teacher guidance. Knowledge and effective use of the principles of design and more research and knowledge of artists in history is expected. This class qualifies as a fine art credit.
Sculpture Ceramics AR55
Grades: 09-12 College Prep: Yes Credit: 0.50 Duration: 1 semester Fee: $15.00
This is an introductory studio class for students who wish to explore the art of ceramics. Emphasis will be placed on the design elements: line, shape, texture, form and color. Focus will be on hand building techniques: pinch, coil and slabs. Functional as well as sculptural applications will be explored. Glazing techniques will be introduced. There will also be an introduction to traditional and historical ceramic arts incorporated into the studio experiences.

More emphasis will be placed on the craftsmanship and quality of the finished product. Students will propose projects of their own design as well as teacher-designed projects. This Advanced Ceramics class is for students who demonstrate a serious commitment to excellence and personal growth of their artwork. Students will choose and prepare artwork for many exhibits. Prerequisite: Ceramics and Sculpture I & II.

Advanced Art Studio AR67

Advanced Art Studio is the capstone of the art program here at Coconino High School. All students enrolled in this course are required to have completed Introduction to Art and Drawing and Painting 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. This course is designed for students who have a post-secondary interest in Art. With six semesters of high school art already completed, students will be expected to guide their talents and interests into any two-dimensional medium and create a portfolio of work throughout the semester. Students will be expected to focus in on a specific area and to demonstrate relative mastery within that medium. A working knowledge of all of the elements and principles of design is expected. Students will develop their skills and hone their technical abilities during this course. Prerequisite: Intro to Art, Drawing & Painting 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5.

The IB Diploma Programme visual arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. It is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media. The course is designed for students who want to go on to further study of visual arts in higher education as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts. The role of visual arts teachers should be to actively and carefully organize learning experiences for the students, directing their study to enable them to reach their potential and satisfy the demands of the course. Students should be empowered to become autonomous, informed and skilled visual artists.
