AP US History is a year-long class designed to provide an in-depth study of United States History from its beginning roots to the modern era. It prepares students for college level work as well as the Advanced Placement exam in the spring. English 101 is a three-credit-hour survey course that introduces students to critical reading and writing in the academic community.  Throughout the semester we practice the reading process:  generating questions or deriving answers from texts; summarizing texts; identifying examples, drawing inferences, and making logical or comparative connections; organizing information in a variety of ways; seeing and learning rhetorical skills used by effective writers; and evaluating the merits of what we read.  At the same time, we practice the writing process: identifying audience and purpose; gathering or finding ideas; organizing and interrelating those ideas for readers; drafting in order to develop, support, and illustrate ideas; revising from trial-and-error and in light of peer input; editing for clarity and accuracy. Prerequisite: Qualifying score on the ACT or Accuplacer test.

Students will extend their understanding of previously studied topics in the Algebra II curriculum such as complex numbers, functions, polynomials and rational functions, translations, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry unit circle. Additionally, students will explore concepts in trigonometry (including analytic trig, and additional topics in trigonometry), conic sections, matrices and determinants, binomial expansion, vectors and applications, sequences and series.  The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout the course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. Students will synthesize skills from critical areas to complete complex application tasks as well as adhere to a higher expectation of understanding and justification of their work in preparation for future advanced placement coursework in mathematics.

A passing score on the mathematics placement test from Coconino Community College, a score of 450 on the SAT, or a score of 17 on the ACT mathematics sections is required to qualify for dual enrollment credit with CCC (MAT 140). Year one in Digital Media is an exploratory project based learning environment offering students the opportunity to gain experience in the medium of visual communication.  In year one, we teach the fundamentals of film & video production, website and graphic design.  Participants will find the class and the program, a springboard to a possible future in some of the most highly sought after careers of the 21st Century.  They will approach these opportunities with diverse technology skills that are versatile and can be applied to a number of professions.  We operate in a state of the art computer lab with the most current industry adopted software.  These include, the Adobe CS6 Master Collection, Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign.  For video production, we use Final Cut Pro.  We finish the year by researching various website content management systems, search engine optimization and create a basic website with Wordpress.

Year two in Digital Media builds on year one (Digital Media I is a prerequisite) and provides students a dual enrollment prospect that allows them to gain college credit while in the class.  We delve deeper into visual communication including film & video production techniques, graphic and website design with emphasis on composition, color theory, principles of design and production.   The class model is a multimedia business organization structure.  Students continuing the program choose an area of interest and work within a department.  Departments include, Marketing, Graphic Design, Video Production and Website development.  The curriculum is differentiated according to departments and each department is responsible for creating content for a specific entity.  These are, Panther TV (a school based video blog website), providing support maintaining the school website, creating graphic design projects for Coconino High School, as well as, support and layout of the school newspaper, The Coconino Press.  These projects will provide real world experience and in turn will help students to either launch into a post high school career or allow them to work in a multimedia field while in college. This is a dual enrollment course. We partner with CCC allowing students to earn college credit.
