Dual Enrollment Courses at Coconino High School

These courses are taught at Coconino High School by CHS teachers in partnership with Coconino Community College. Students may possibly earn community college credit by successfully completing these courses with a grade of C or better. For more information about Dual Enrollment courses at CHS, contact either your counselor or the CAVIAT Counselor, Mrs. Donna Lyons.
In Dual Enrollment classes you will:
- Earn college credit at a fraction of the price ($45 per class vs. $300-$1000)
- Work with highly-qualified teachers, all of whom have Master's degrees
- Practice and master various critical/analytical thinking skills necessary for all professions
- Communicate efficiently (writing and speaking)
- Confidently present findings
- Learn how to research and become a master on a topic
- Debate controversial topics
- Listen to and respectfully respond to different perspectives on controversial topics
- Read and analyze college-level texts
- Learn and apply college-level skills
- Possibly earn money (a student submitted a DE 11 essay for a scholarship that won $5000!).

AP US History with DE Option SS77AW/BW

AP US History is a year-long class designed to provide an in-depth study of United States History from its beginning roots to the modern era. It prepares students for college level work as well as the Advanced Placement exam in the spring. All students in this course will be highly encouraged to take the AP Exam for which they can earn college credit.

Students will understand, discuss, and write intelligently about major global historical developments from 1200 C.E. to the present. Students will develop their ability to interpret primary and secondary sources, compare civilizations, and use geographic and statistical data to draw conclusions about the causes and effects of historical events. represents a freshman-level university course and students may receive university credit through the successful completion of the AP World History exam in May. -

English 101 is a three-credit-hour survey course that introduces students to critical reading and writing in the academic community. Throughout the semester we practice the reading process: generating questions or deriving answers from texts; summarizing texts; identifying examples, drawing inferences, and making logical or comparative connections; organizing information in a variety of ways; seeing and learning rhetorical skills used by effective writers; and evaluating the merits of what we read. At the same time, we practice the writing process: identifying audience and purpose; gathering or finding ideas; organizing and interrelating those ideas for readers; drafting in order to develop, support, and illustrate ideas; revising from trial-and-error and in light of peer input; editing for clarity and accuracy. Prerequisite: Qualifying score on the ACT or Accuplacer test.

Honors Pre-Calculus (with Dual Enrollment option) MA96HA/B
Grades: 10-12 College Prep: Yes Credit: 1.0 Duration: 1 year Fee: Prerequisite: Successful completion of honors algebra II or algebra II and teacher recommendation.
Students will extend their understanding of previously studied topics in the Algebra II curriculum such as complex numbers, functions, polynomials and rational functions, translations, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry unit circle. Additionally, students will explore concepts in trigonometry (including analytic trig, and additional topics in trigonometry), conic sections, matrices and determinants, binomial expansion, vectors and applications, sequences and series. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout the course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. Students will synthesize skills from critical areas to complete complex application tasks as well as adhere to a higher expectation of understanding and justification of their work in preparation for future advanced placement coursework in mathematics.

This course is designed to build student awareness and develop a positive attitude, understanding, and confidence using mathematics in the content areas of finance, growth, probability, statistics, and common applications encountered in society. This class is not recommended for students who intend to take Pre-Calculus the following year. A passing score on the mathematics placement test from Coconino Community College, a score of 450 on the SAT, or a score of 17 on the ACT mathematics sections is required to qualify for dual enrollment credit with CCC (MAT 140). This course is ideal for students who desire to work in medical careers as physicians, nurses, physical therapists, speech pathologists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, and many other avenues. Taking this course in high school provides a head start for college-level science curriculum. Some students may take the course because of personal interests or curiosity. The course has prerequisites of passing grades in Biology and Chemistry to be eligible for enrollment. Automotive II is focused on expanding from Auto I with advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting. Students will be working with project cars as well as lab based projects. Students will be introduced to axles, transmissions, engine performance, etc. This class is based on NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) curriculum designed to prepare students for a career in the automotive field. Year one in Digital Media is an exploratory project based learning environment offering students the opportunity to gain experience in the medium of visual communication. In year one, we teach the fundamentals of film & video production, website and graphic design. Participants will find the class and the program, a springboard to a possible future in some of the most highly sought after careers of the 21st Century. They will approach these opportunities with diverse technology skills that are versatile and can be applied to a number of professions. We operate in a state of the art computer lab with the most current industry adopted software. These include, the Adobe CS6 Master Collection, Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign. For video production, we use Final Cut Pro. We finish the year by researching various website content management systems, search engine optimization and create a basic website with Wordpress.

Year two in Digital Media builds on year one (Digital Media I is a prerequisite) and provides students a dual enrollment prospect that allows them to gain college credit while in the class. We delve deeper into visual communication including film & video production techniques, graphic and website design with emphasis on composition, color theory, principles of design and production. The class model is a multimedia business organization structure. Students continuing the program choose an area of interest and work within a department. Departments include, Marketing, Graphic Design, Video Production and Website development. The curriculum is differentiated according to departments and each department is responsible for creating content for a specific entity. These are, Panther TV (a school based video blog website), providing support maintaining the school website, creating graphic design projects for Coconino High School, as well as, support and layout of the school newspaper, The Coconino Press. These projects will provide real world experience and in turn will help students to either launch into a post high school career or allow them to work in a multimedia field while in college. This is a dual enrollment course. We partner with CCC allowing students to earn college credit.
