Fifth Grade
Welcome to Fifth Grade Academics!

Reading and Writing
Your child will learn to:
- Read 5th grade materials accurately, fluently and with appropriate pacing
- Use context to determine the relevant meaning of words that have multiple meanings
- Understand and identify literal vs. figurative words/language
- Exhibit comprehension by drawing conclusions, determining cause and effect, making inferences
- Identify parts within plot and point of view (first/third person, omniscient)
- Distinguish fact from opinion in text
- Identify persuasive writing strategies (peer pressure, repetition, etc)
- Extend and improve use of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing)
- Learn and use the effective writing traits
- focus ideas that hold the reader’s attention
- clear organization
- a “voice” or tone that matches the style of the writing
- carefully selected words
- use of both simple and complex sentences that flow naturally
- correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, grammar and paragraphing

Mathematics and Science
Your child will learn to:
- Compare and determine equivalency between whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages
- Sort prime numbers (divisible only by itself or 1) vs. composite numbers (divisible by numbers other than itself or 1)
- Simplify fractions to lowest terms
- Add, Subtract, multiply and divide decimals
- Estimate and measure area/perimeter
- Construct bar graphs, line plots, and tables to organize and label data
- Solve algebraic equations with one missing variable (15 = 45) n)
- Identify properties of two and three dimensional geometric figures
- Draw prisms, pyramids, cones and cylinders
- Identify properties of triangles, circles, and angles
- Formulate questions and predictions for investigation/experimentation; identify trends and form conclusions
- Explain impact of national hazards on environment
- Identify functions and parts of the skeletal, nervous, and muscular systems
- Use simple machines to examine forces (gravity and friction) and motion
- Understand the relationship of the Earth to other objects in solar system
Social Studies
Fifth grade examines U.S. history from the earliest Native American cultures to the Civil War. Issues of exploration and rebellion as it relates to U.S. history.
Technology, Art, Music and PE
Your child will learn to:
- Understand the value of art and music throughout history
- Identify the meaning or ideas communicated through art and music
- Learn vocabulary and skills needed to create and perform
- Develop motor skills
- Establish habits for a healthy and active lifestyle
- Foster positive communication and interaction with peers
- Use technology safely and effectively for research, learning, communication and exploration
